A t-shirt size chart is a standardized reference guide that maps letter sizes (such as XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL) to exact physical body dimensions and finished garment measurements in inches and centimeters. It includes key data points such as chest circumference, body length, shoulder width, and sleeve length, helping shoppers select the perfect fit across different clothing brands, cuts, and international sizing standards.

In standard apparel sizing, a size 42 is classified as a Large (L). A size 42 t-shirt or shirt corresponds to a 42-inch (106.7 cm) chest circumference (or 21 inches laid flat armpit-to-armpit). It is designed to comfortably fit an individual with an actual body chest measurement of 38 to 40 inches, providing the recommended 2 to 4 inches of wearing ease.

To decide your ideal t-shirt size: 1. Measure your body chest circumference: Wrap a flexible tape around the fullest part of your chest under your armpits. 2. Add your desired ease: Add 0–1 inch for a Slim fit, 2–3 inches for a Classic/Regular fit, or 4–6 inches for an Oversized/Relaxed fit. 3. Match to the size chart: Compare your total calculated chest measurement with the garment chest on the size chart. 4. Alternatively, measure an existing favorite tee laid flat from armpit to armpit and multiply by 2.

For an average man who is 5'10" (approx. 178 cm): • Slim / Lean Build (Chest 36–38"): Size Medium (M) with a typical garment length of 27–28 inches. • Athletic / Average Build (Chest 39–41"): Size Large (L) with a typical garment length of 28–29 inches. • Broad / Heavy Build (Chest 42–44"+): Size XL or 2XL. At 5'10", standard regular t-shirts with a length of 27.5 to 29 inches will hit ideally around mid-fly on your pants.

For a man who is 5'4" (approx. 162 cm): • Lean Build (Chest 34–36"): Size Small (S) or Extra Small (XS) with a preferred garment length of 25–26 inches. • Average Build (Chest 37–39"): Size Medium (M). Look for brands offering a slightly shorter torso length (26–27 inches) so the t-shirt does not drape too far below the hips. • Sizing Tip: Avoid tall or longline cuts, and look for standard or custom short fits for balanced proportions.

An XL (Extra Large) shirt size represents: • Chest Circumference: 44 to 46 inches (111.8 to 116.8 cm). • Flat Garment Width (Pit-to-Pit): 22 to 23 inches (56 to 58.5 cm). • Body Length: Approximately 29.5 to 31 inches (75 to 78.7 cm). • Formal Shirt Collar: 17 to 17.5 inches (43 to 44.5 cm). • Target Fit: Perfectly accommodates individuals with a natural body chest measurement of 41 to 43 inches.
